Effective from November 30, 2025
Please make sure you and your customers are aware of the new registration requirements for .IN domains.
Scope
These new rules apply to the following domain extensions:
- .IN
 - .CO.IN, .NET.IN, .ORG.IN, .FIRM.IN, .GEN.IN, .IND.IN
 - بارت (xn—mgbbh1)

The Indian registry will begin conducting random audits on both new and existing domain registrations.
The registry requires responses within three working days after an audit occurs. If no response is provided, affected domain names may be temporarily suspended by the registry.
Requirements for Registrants Outside of India
For registrants based outside India, the registry requires specific documentation. The registry requires that you have the following data on file. Alternatively, provide this information to us within three working days from your customers:
- Passport
 - Driving License
 - Government-issued identification from their country
 - Letter from a Foreign Embassy or Indian Mission
 - Income Tax Returns (last two years)
 - Other government-issued photo ID (e.g. Social Security Number)

If a registrant prefers not to share this information with the Indian registry, please note that .IN domains may not be suitable for them. In that case, consider registering an alternative domain extension/ccTLD.
Documentation of Intent for Foreign Applicants
For .IN domains registered by entities outside India (non-resident/foreign registrants), resellers are required to collect a signed declaration from the registrant stating their legitimate business connection or purpose in India.
Reseller duties:
- Collect and verify the declaration at the time of registration.
 - Keep a copy of the declaration on file.
 - Provide the declaration to the .IN Registry upon request.

If the declaration is not provided:
the .IN domain registration must be placed on client hold until the required documentation is received.
Registry rights:
The .IN Registry reserves the sole and absolute right to accept or reject any .IN domain registration request from a foreign registrant.
Requirements for Indian Nationals
For Indian registrants, the following documents are accepted:
- Passport
 - Voter ID
 - Driving License
 - Aadhaar Card
 - PAN Card
 - Any other official ID issued by the Government of India

Reseller duties:
- Collect and verify these documents.
 - Submit a certificate of confirmation to the .IN Registry confirming e-KYC completion.
 - Retain all documents securely for the entire domain lifecycle plus 90 days.
 - Provide documents to the registry within three working days upon request.

Additional Registry Rules and Restrictions: What the Registry Does Not Allow
Privacy/Proxy or Local Presence Services
Using trustee or local presence services to mask registrant contact data is not allowed.
Temporary Email Addresses
The registry strictly prohibits the use of temporary or disposable email addresses.
The following services are not allowed:
10 Minute Mail • EmailOnDeck • Guerrilla Mail • Hushmail • Mailfence • Mailinator • ProtonMail • StartMail • Temp Mail • Tutanota
(Note: This list may change in the future.)
What the Registry Expects Resellers to Do
Record of IP Logs
Resellers must maintain detailed records of all IP logs related to the registration and management of .IN domain names, including:
- IP addresses
 - Timestamps
 - Activity logs of all interactions between your system and the registrant’s system or domain

These records must be securely stored for the entire domain lifecycle plus 90 days.
Restriction on VPN Use
Resellers are required to implement and maintain technical measures to prevent .IN domain registrations via VPN connections.
WHOIS Visibility for .IN Domains
Currently, WHOIS data for .IN domains is redacted by the registry.
However, under the updated Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA), registrant contact details will need to be publicly accessible via WHOIS.
The registry has not yet made WHOIS data public, but this is expected to change in the near future as they align with the new policy.
Please be aware that this change may have negative implications for your customers once implemented.
