The Indian domain registry operator NIXI has introduced a new Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA), now mandatory for all registrars handling `.IN` domain names. Realtime Register has signed this agreement but will implement it with specific limitations to remain compliant while safeguarding operational efficiency.
Key impact for registrars & resellers
Due to strict e-KYC requirements, we will no longer accept new .IN registrations from registrants based in India.
For .IN creates, registrants with country code IN will no longer be accepted.
The e-KYC obligation requires collection and verification of sensitive identity documents from Indian citizens—a process Realtime Register cannot support within its current privacy and operational framework.
Additional restrictions under the new RAA
The new agreement introduces several other compliance obligations that may affect how you manage .IN domains:
Throwaway email addresses prohibited
NIXI prohibits the use of temporary or encrypted email providers for .IN registrants. This includes services like ProtonMail and Tutanota.
If technical enforcement proves difficult, we will provide guidance to resellers to avoid using these services when registering .IN domains.
Cryptocurrency payments not allowed
While Realtime Register does not accept crypto payments directly, NIXI explicitly bans any cryptocurrency transactions for .IN domain activity. Please ensure resellers are also informed.
Summary of Realtime Register’s .IN domain policy (effective immediately):
Requirement | Realtime Register action |
---|---|
e-KYC for Indian registrants | Not supported – Indian registrants excluded |
Temporary/throwaway email use | Resellers will be informed; technical options under review |
Crypto payment restrictions | Compliant – crypto not supported |
