.pt Introduces Mandatory Registrant Contact Verification

As of 30 June 2026, .pt has introduced mandatory registrant contact validation and verification for selected domain operations. The new requirements are part of Portugal's implementation of the NIS2 Directive and apply to all registrars.

For Realtime Register partners, we've integrated the new verification process into our platform to help ensure registrations and contact updates continue as smoothly as possible.

What has changed?

From now on, registrant contact details must be both validated and verified before certain .pt operations can be completed.

Validation confirms that the registrant information is complete and consistent, while verification confirms that the registered email address and phone number are active and reachable.

The new requirements apply to:

  • New .pt domain registrations
  • Registrant (ownership) transfers
  • Changes to a registrant's email address or phone number

Domain renewals are not affected.

How Realtime Register handles the process

We've incorporated the required verification steps directly into our platform.

Email validation continues through the existing .pt terms and conditions acceptance flow, while phone verification is completed using a one time SMS code sent to the registrant during the registration or contact update process.

Once both checks have been completed successfully, the contact can be used for eligible .pt domain operations. A successful validation and verification remains valid for three years.

What your customers should know

If your customers register a new .pt domain, transfer ownership, or update their registrant email address or phone number, they will be asked to verify their phone number by entering a one time code received via SMS.

Without completing this verification, the requested domain operation cannot be processed. Existing validated contacts remain valid and do not need to be verified again unless their three year validation period expires or their email address or phone number is updated.
