Changes to .dk Domain Management

Punktum dk has announced a significant shift in how .dk domain names will be managed. While the transition will take place over the next two years, it introduces important changes that will affect how you register and maintain .dk domains for your customers.

This article outlines what is changing, when it happens, and what it means for you as a Realtime Register partner.

A move to a fully registrar-led model

The most important change is that Punktum dk will gradually phase out registrant-managed domains and move to a registrar-management-only model

This means that, in the future, all .dk domains must be managed through a registrar like Realtime Register, rather than directly by the registrant.

Key dates and milestones

1 July 2026

  • All new .dk domain registrations must be created under registrar management
  • New registrations and renewals will be limited to one-year terms only

1 July 2026 – 30 June 2028

  • Transition period for existing registrant-managed domains
  • Registrants must choose a registrar to continue managing their domain

1 July 2028

  • Full transition complete
  • Registrant-managed domains will no longer exist

What this means for you

While the change is gradual, it will impact your day-to-day operations and customer communication.

1. All new domains will follow a different model
From July 2026 onwards, every new .dk domain you register will automatically fall under registrar management. This aligns .dk with many other TLDs and simplifies long-term management structures.

2. One-year registration periods only
Multi-year registrations and renewals will no longer be possible for .dk domains. This may require adjustments to your billing cycles, automation, or customer expectations.

3. Existing domains require action
Customers with registrant-managed .dk domains will need to actively select a registrar before July 2028. Without this step, they risk losing proper management of their domain.

4. Increased need for customer communication
You will play a key role in guiding customers through this transition. Clear communication will be essential, especially for those who:

  • currently manage their domain directly via Punktum dk
  • are unaware of the upcoming changes
  • need help selecting and configuring a registrar setup

What you should do now

Although no immediate action is required, we recommend preparing early:

  • Identify affected customers with registrant-managed .dk domains
  • Plan communication campaigns to inform them about the transition
  • Review your processes for handling one-year renewals
  • Prepare support teams for increased customer questions

Ongoing updates

Punktum dk has also announced updates to its registrar agreement as part of this transition. We are closely monitoring these developments and will keep you informed if any action is required from your side.

Key takeaway

The .dk namespace is moving to a fully registrar-led model. From July 2026, all new registrations will follow this approach, with a full transition completed by July 2028.

As a partner, preparing your customers early will help ensure a smooth transition.
