401.6 Million Domains: Looking Beyond the Growth

The global domain market has passed another major milestone. At the end of the second quarter of 2026, there were 401.6 million domain name registrations worldwide, an increase of 29.9 million compared with the same period last year.

For the domain industry, that growth is encouraging. But for registrars and resellers, registration volume alone does not tell the whole story.

Domain registrations continue to grow

According to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief, the combined .com and .net domain base reached 179.1 million registrations in Q2. Country-code TLDs accounted for another 148.6 million registrations.

One of the strongest areas of growth came from new gTLDs. Their combined domain base reached 52.9 million registrations, representing 34% year-on-year growth.

But registration growth and long-term value are not necessarily the same thing.

The latest combined renewal estimate for new gTLDs was 31%, while the preliminary Q2 renewal percentage for .com and .net was 75.2%. These figures are not directly comparable across individual extensions, markets or registration strategies, but they demonstrate why looking beyond initial registration numbers matters.

What does valuable domain growth look like?

For service providers, the more useful question is not simply how many domains are being registered. It is what happens after that registration.

Are customers renewing? How dependent is growth on promotions? What margin remains after registry and operational costs? And are domain customers also using other services from your portfolio?

Looking at factors such as renewal, margin, customer retention and the adoption of additional services can provide a more complete picture of the value behind your domain growth.

That becomes increasingly important as the underlying cost of domains changes.

On 1 November 2026, Verisign will increase the registry-level wholesale fee for new and renewed .com domains from $10.26 to $10.97. For providers operating at scale, changes like these make understanding the value and margin behind registrations even more important.

Look beyond the registration number

Passing 400 million registrations is a positive signal for the domain industry. Demand for domain names continues to grow, creating opportunities for registrars, resellers and other digital service providers.

But sustainable growth is about more than adding registrations.

The real opportunity is to build a domain business around customers who stay, renew and continue to find value in the services you provide. For partners, that means looking beyond registration volume and focusing on the long-term value behind every domain.
